Primetime Program – Primetime is a cooperative effort of the Waterloo Community Schools and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), engaging volunteers 55 and older in volunteer service in the Waterloo School District. The primary focus area is improving elementary students’ reading skills; called Reading Buddies. These are students who are not grade level proficient in their reading skills. RSVP assists the schools with recruitment, volunteer training and placement.
Reading Buddies -Volunteers meet with teacher identified student(s), in a one to one or small group setting, assisting the student(s) with teacher directed activities to help improve student reading skills. Classroom teachers and or literacy coaches provide guidance to the volunteer on what activities need to be worked on. Training will be provided by the respective teacher or school literacy coach.
- The goal is for students to improve their lagging reading skills.
- Skills required by volunteer: Volunteers must be patient and literate themselves, being able to read and speak clearly and fluently. It is important the volunteer adheres to the agreed upon schedule and when not able to attend lets the teacher know.
- Time commitment: Once or more a week. The time served per visit is determined by the
teacher. The frequency the volunteer will meet with student(s) is determined by the teacher and agreed upon by the volunteer.
