The Program: Storytime STEM Packs We believe every great invention starts with a story. Our youngest learners dive into Storytime STEM, an adventure that bridges the gap between beloved literature and computer science.

The Challenge: Students tackle real-world problems faced by their favorite book characters.
The Goal: Through collaboration and play, students make sense of complex STEM concepts, proving you’re never too young to be a computer scientist!

🧱2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades: Building the Future, Brick by Brick

The Program: FLL Explore in the Classroom We’ve leveled up the traditional classroom experience by bringing LEGO® League directly into the school day. By integrating FLL Explore into our curriculum, we ensure 100% of our students gain hands-on experience with coding and mechanical design.

The Access: Every student gets to build, code, and create.
The Pipeline: This early exposure fuels the fire for our competitive after-school programs, including FLL Challenge, Robotics, and Tech Challenge!

🤖5th Grade: Coding in Motion

The Program: The Finch Robot In 5th grade, coding gets personal. Meet the Finch Robot—a powerhouse of LEDs, sensors, and wheels designed to bring code to life.

Creative Coding: Students use block-based and icon-based coding to navigate the Finch and even use it to draw geometric masterpieces.
Cross-Curricular Magic: Whether it’s solving a complex math problem or illustrating a story through movement, the Finch Robot proves that STEM is woven into everything we do.

What is FIRST LEGO League Challenge?

FIRST LEGO League Challenge is an exciting global STEM program for students ages 9-16 (typically 4th-8th grade). It engages students in hands-on robotics, coding, and research, challenging them to solve real-world problems. Teams dive into a themed challenge, developing innovative solutions and building teamwork skills.

Key Features of FIRST LEGO League Challenge:

Annual Challenge Theme: Each year, FIRST releases a new challenge focusing on a relevant global issue.
Robot Game: Teams design, build, and program an autonomous LEGO Spike Prime robot to complete missions on a themed playing field.
Innovation Project: Teams research a problem related to the challenge theme and develop an innovative solution.
Core Values: Teams embody FIRST's Core Values: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun.
Qualifiers and Championships: Teams compete in regional qualifier events, with top performers advancing to the Iowa State Championships. Waterloo hosts an event every December!

How It Works in Waterloo:

After-School Engagement: FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams meet outside of the regular school day, typically after school hours or on weekends.
Dedicated Coaches: Teams are led by dedicated coaches, often teachers, parents, or community volunteers, who guide students through the program.
Community Support: The district actively seeks community support, including mentors and sponsors, to enhance the program.

During the 2024-2025 season, the Waterloo Community School District proudly fielded 25 FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams, demonstrating our commitment to expanding STEM opportunities.

Teams of high school students, with the guidance of adult mentors, have six weeks to design, build, and program a large, complex robot to compete in a challenging and dynamic game. FRC is a powerful platform for students to develop technical skills, teamwork, and leadership, while experiencing the excitement of real-world engineering.

Large-Scale Robotics: Teams design and build large, complex robots that require advanced engineering and programming skills.
