Congratulations to the Lincoln Preschool for being awarded a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) grant from the Waterloo Community Schools Foundation to support their Architects in the Making project. The grant help fund blocks for building and books about architects.
Block play develops many math skills, such as non-standard measurement, balance, symmetry, comparison of size/shape, as well as imagination, cooperative play, negotiation skills, and language.
Architects and Civil Engineers are STEM occupations that few Waterloo students pursue, so this is one way the Preschool students gain exposure to these occupations! Building is fun, creating is fun! If a student becomes an architect, then he/she would get to “play blocks” their entire life and some of their buildings could last 100’s of years! What a legacy to leave!
