Iowa 8th Graders Eligible for High School Sports
The Waterloo Community School District will now allow some 8th-grade students to participate in high school sports programs, aligning with updated guidelines from the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU).
Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis through a collaborative process between district athletic leadership, head coaches, and families, taking into account student safety, physical readiness, skill level, and the impact on both middle and high school rosters. District leadership emphasizes that this protocol does not guarantee team placement, playing time, or roster selection.
Final decisions reside with the respective high school head coach, in coordination with the Athletics Department and the student’s family, while strictly adhering to all local and state regulations. If a student plays a sport as an 8th grader, they can compete at either the middle school or high school level, but not both in the same school year.

The Intent to Participate form will only be filled out by parents if the 8th grader is seeking to participate in a sport that has an 8th grade team.

2026/27 Athletic Activity & Registration
We are excited to launch a new online Athletic & Activity Registration process for all students in grades 7-12.
Beginning July 8, 2026, registration will be available through the Infinite Campus Parent and Student Portals. This new process provides a single location to complete required forms, upload physicals, and register for athletic and activity participation.
All required forms must be completed before students are cleared to participate.
