Mental Health Supports

Waterloo Community School District is committed to supporting students, families, and staff with resources to improve their mental and emotional wellness. Our goal is to eliminate barriers that impact student achievement.

The Waterloo Community School District has trained nearly 1,000 staff and community members over the last four years in Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.

Our staff continues to enhance their knowledge of mental health by participating in trainings addressing suicide prevention, adverse childhood experiences, and social-emotional learning.

The Waterloo Community School District continues to support efforts to care for the emotional well-being of children and youth, which can extend beyond the classroom and into the school environment. School-based mental health services can focus on promoting mental wellness, preventing mental health problems, and providing treatment.

Our district partners with Success Street to provide school-based mental health services to students, K-12. Through this partnership with Success Street, early intervention is possible.

A full range of therapeutic modalities is offered through the school-based mental health clinic.  School-based mental health therapists work collaboratively with parents, school staff, and other professionals to coordinate care.

School-based mental health services can be accessed by contacting your child’s school counselor to initiate the referral process.
