🍎 Meet the Heart of Kindergarten: Jennifer Renslow! ✨
Get to know one of Kittrell Elementary’s bright stars, Kindergarten Teacher Jennifer Renslow, who is celebrating another year of transforming young minds!
ㅤ
Jennifer has known she wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember. Now, she focuses on nurturing not just students, but strong relationships with their families, too. What truly drives her is witnessing the incredible journey of growth.
ㅤ
"Seeing the growth and progress from the beginning of the year to the end of the year amazes me every year," Renslow shares. "I love when students learn something new and become confident learners."
ㅤ
Jennifer is well-known for her creative and resilient spirit, especially when tackling the misperception that Kindergarten is a tough grade to teach. She flips that script by making it the most fun! Her students might know her best for her famous classroom transformations, like "Bat Day" or the "100th Day Spy Lab," where learning is so exciting they don't even realize how much they're soaking up.
ㅤ
This year, her goal for her young learners is simple yet profound: to love school and learn all they can to be successful in the future.
ㅤ
Thank you, Jennifer, for your dedication to the youngest learners at Kittrell!

✨ Bubbly, Bright, and Bilingual: Meet Juliana! 👮♀️
We are absolutely delighted to feature first-grader Juliana from Kittrell Elementary, a truly sweet, bubbly, and vibrant soul who brings immense joy to her classroom!
ㅤ
Juliana is a happy, outgoing student who is already working hard toward a bright future. She loves Math because it makes her smarter, and she thinks the learning games with JiJi are pretty cool! As a bilingual speaker who speaks Spanish at home, Juliana attends ELL to help her become fluent in English. She's getting better every day and is determined to master both languages.
ㅤ
When she's not acing math, Juliana loves spending time at the park or with her black cat, Big Boy. When she grows up, she plans to be a police officer to keep her community safe—and she thinks Big Boy might just be her partner, spreading joy wherever they patrol!😺
ㅤ
Kittrell Elementary holds a special place in Juliana's heart. Her favorite part of the day is when she first arrives and is greeted with a big smile, followed by reciting the pledge, which makes her happy because she is honoring America. Juliana understands the power of positivity and connection:
“Smiling is great and makes others feel good! You never know when a smile can make someone’s day.”
ㅤ
Everyone at Kittrell is so nice and welcoming, making Juliana feel right at home. We are so proud of this future officer and bilingual leader!

🍎 Flipping the Script with Kittrell's Deb Hudson! 🌟
Meet Deb Hudson, a 4th Grade Teacher at Kittrell Elementary who is a true veteran of the classroom, now teaching the children of her former students in her 28th year! Deb was drawn to education because she wanted a career where she could help people and make a positive difference in a small way—and teaching kids was the perfect fit.
ㅤ
What she loves most is building lasting relationships with her students and watching them grow. This passion is exactly how she works to Flip the Script on the fear of failure in the classroom.
ㅤ
"I try to teach students to have a growth mindset, to take a temporary failure and turn it into an opportunity to grow. Mistakes are proof of learning."
ㅤ
Ms. Hudson instills in her students the belief that every error is a chance for progress, not a reason to quit. She appreciates the genuine enthusiasm for learning that elementary students bring every day—they are fun and always keep her on her toes!
ㅤ
Her goal for the year is simple: to continue to find the joy in every day, regardless of the challenges. While she can't pick just one favorite memory, hearing from former students about the difference she made in their lives is the most rewarding feeling of all.
ㅤ
Ms. Hudson, a truly #DownToEarth educator, is making connections and proving that growth is always possible at Kittrell Elementary!

🚀 Soaring to Success: Meet Kittrell’s Barrett! 📚
We are celebrating second-grader Barrett from Kittrell Elementary, whose passion for learning and incredible progress this year are truly inspiring!
ㅤ
With the help of his Unity Point Home Health Nurse, Trisha Adolphs, we hear about Barrett's amazing journey. Barrett is thriving in his general education classroom and absolutely loves his time in the library (especially reading Pete the Cat books), the gym, and taking his power chair for laps!
ㅤ
This year, Barrett has made huge strides, particularly in math—he’s incredibly fast with ST Math! His focus on learning is paying off: he has drastically improved his reading fluency and communication skills, navigating his tablet so well that he can now type full sentences. He is also making great progress on his goal of improving decision-making skills.
ㅤ
Barrett's success is a true reflection of the welcoming environment at Kittrell. He is included in everything, with staff adapting all activities to ensure he is always a part of the fun.
ㅤ
Nurse Trisha Adolphs notes that the collaborative atmosphere is key:
"The school includes Barrett in everything! They adapt all activities so he is always included, and his classmates are just amazing—so accepting and always wanting to be his partner and helper."
Go, Barrett, go! We are so proud of your hard work and the wonderful, unified community at Kittrell!

Real-World Management in Action! 🏃♀️📈
The Waterloo Career Center (WCC) Principles of Management students are bringing their curriculum to life through an exciting partnership with The Runner's Flat and local leader Scott Gall!
This project is a masterclass in professional skills, challenging students to navigate decision-making, planning, and implementation. They are building communication skills through professional phone calls, networking with business leaders, and demonstrating civic responsibility by donating all proceeds to a local charity.
The students are incredibly excited and have launched a Facebook event (link needed) and online registration with payment options (a huge challenge conquered!). Follow along to support their work and see the impact of their management skills!

Amazing work, students!
SRO Feature: Building Bridges at East High School 🧡🖤
We're shining a spotlight on Officer Thomas, who is celebrating his second year as the dedicated School Resource Officer (SRO) at East High School!
ㅤ
Officer Thomas views his role as more than just enforcement; it is fundamentally about mentorship and connection. He is focused on bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community by being consistently present in students’ lives—not just in a uniform, but as a trusted adult at games, dances, and everyday events.
ㅤ
His dedication is rooted in fostering the growth and development of the students. By hearing their stories, celebrating their achievements, and providing direction, Officer Thomas sees the interaction as a two-way street that requires a growth mindset from everyone involved.
ㅤ
Officer Thomas notes, "It’s the relationships you get to build with the students. You hear their stories, they tell you about their achievements, they ask for advice, and you get to see them grow. It's what I am here for and the main reason I chose this position."
ㅤ
The positive impact of his presence is clearly felt by the students. Tenth grader Keshawn shared:
ㅤ
"Officer Thomas is really nice and fun to joke around with. I talk to him almost every day, he is always talking to students. He is always trying to help kids, I am glad that he is here at East."
ㅤ
Officer Thomas has successfully earned the trust of the students and staff, making East High feel like a second home. We are so thankful for the positive connections and guidance he provides every day!

🌟 Future Math Teacher: Meet Kittrell’s Carson! 🎓
We’re celebrating fourth-grader Carson, a student who exemplifies kindness, intellectual curiosity, and a powerful drive for self-improvement at Kittrell Elementary!
ㅤ
Carson is known for being smart, kind, and incredibly helpful to everyone. He loves attending Kittrell, especially how the staff makes learning easy and fun through engaging activities and games. Inspired by his family's knack for numbers, Carson is determined to become a math teacher one day and hopes to return to Kittrell to give back to the school he enjoys so much!
ㅤ
This year, Carson has truly flipped the script on managing his emotions. He has made huge strides by focusing on listening and intentionally thinking about his actions before reacting, learning valuable coping skills he knows will benefit him throughout his entire life. He understands the importance of this personal growth.
ㅤ
Carson has also embraced a leader role for his younger siblings at Kittrell, helping them with homework and preparing them for the future. Reflecting on his journey at the school, he shares his motivation:
"It's important to be good to keep improving myself and becoming a better person. Being a Kittrell Cougar is a privilege—you don't have long to be here, so you have to take it all in!"
Carson's progress, combined with his dedication to helping others, makes him an outstanding Cougar. We are thrilled to share this special photo of Carson with one of his favorite teachers, Ms. Garman!
