PCL at Lincoln
Lincoln Elementary has a partnership with the University of Northern Iowa’s Jacobson Center for Comprehensive Literacy. Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy (PCL) is a model of school transformation that focuses on improved literacy learning for all children.
The PCL emphasizes several key points:
- Continuous development of teacher expertise through ongoing intensive professional development;
- Continuous collaboration between teachers, and between teachers and administrators;
- A systems approach that integrates assessment, teaching, and learning across all grades and units within a school.
- A powerful Response-To-Intervention (RTI) approach called the Comprehensive Intervention Model (CIM)
- Literacy coaching as a key leadership position to guide, facilitate, monitor, and improve the school change process.
Professional development schools are partnerships between university-based teacher education programs and K-12 schools. UNI’s LEPDS is a partnership with Lincoln Elementary School in Waterloo. Undergraduate UNI students with Elementary Education majors and Literacy Education minors may apply for membership in the program. Cohorts of students take a significant portion of their teacher education coursework (with a special focus on their Literacy Education program) at Lincoln, where UNI professors not only teach the courses but also collaborate closely with Lincoln faculty in providing field experiences for the students that are integrated with their coursework.
